Where Do I Begin: Decluttering

January is National Get Organized Month and I’m here for it! Even organized folks have opportunities to reevaluate, rearrange, and minimize what inventory they have. So where should you start?

1. An easy space like a drawer or small closet- if you’re just getting your feet wet with minimizing, don’t start with your garage or office! Work into it with a space you know you can conquer and use that as practice for more daunting rooms.

2. “To the left, to the left!“ Okay, I might not be Beyoncé but her song is my first tip about decluttering. If you feel overwhelmed in a room, start to the left of the main doorway and work your way around at your pace.

3. Start with items you know you need to get rid of because they are

A. Trash.

B. Giveaway.

C. Need to be stored elsewhere/returned to their owner/etc.

Skimming those off the top gives you less to work with right away.

Keep in mind your goal and vision for that space. That vision will keep you focused and unemotional about the process- it’s worth it in the end! More tidying tips to come but this should help you start. Once you conquer a space, you’ll be motivated to move on!

I welcome before and after photos so please share your experience and progress!
